Ms. Bell has been raising rabbits longer then most HRS members have been alive. Rabbits were domesticated for HUMAN FOOD animals not pets, and are close to the bottom of all natural food chains. The average life span for wild rabbits is LESS THAN 3 years; I personally know of many show rabbits (that the HRS would say have been abused/cruelly cared for because they have been cared for PROPERLY) that are many years older than 3 years. Fat, over-weight rabbits are not healthy rabbits - obesity is just as bad for them as it is for people.
True rabbit breeders use commercial rabbit food for a reason, not because it is cheaper because believe me it is not and gets more expensive all the time, but because it was scientifically formulated to meet all the rabbit's nutritional needs.
Rabbits do make great pets and if that is what you want to do with them great but learn how to properly take care of them and don't judge others for using them for what they have been bred 100's of years for.
Karen your site is a great resource, and we all really appreciate all of your time in creating it. We all have to stick together and fight the good fight and educate the ones we can.
Everyone please remember treat your animals well, and know that animal rights activists are NOT always right. These are the same people that call the whales of Sea World slaves and that we and our dogs should all be vegans. And for the ones that don't know, dogs are descended from wolves - forcing them to eat only vegetables is truly cruel.
Comments for I wish there was a way to educate more people

I don't know anything about rabbits. A couple friends have had pet rabbits before. I'm a biologist and have always had a cat as a family pet. I love animals. There's my disclaimer.
I found out about this woman's story through a blog which warns about intrusive government action. This woman was strong-armed in the worst way. So many of her rights were violated it makes my head spin. I hope a lawyer gets hold of her case and sticks it to the sheriff's office, the House Rabbits Society, and whoever else had a hand in essentially robbing this woman. I wish her rabbits would be returned to her but, sadly, I fear she will have to start over, if she has the heart to.
These are the same idiots who would try to tell people they ought not be allowed to have "barn cats" that mouse. Does my cat live that way? No, my cat is an indoor-only cat that is babied beyond recognition. But I would never deign to tell a farmer that he is somehow abusing his free-roaming cats whose primary job is to kill vermin. Livestock and working animals are not always pets and are not necessarily cared for in the same way. I will be the first to stand up and condemn genuine cases of animal abuse, but this just strikes me as the worst kind of misguided outrage enabled by jackbooted officers who illegally entered a woman's private property.
Comments for Someone needs to stand up for this woman.
