Surprise baby rabbits
by Taylor
(Germany)
Well, I got asked to look after 4 rabbits over Christmas, 3 female and 1 male (apparently). They were in different cages as the male hadn't been done. I've been taking care of them for less than a week and go to feed them when I get back from school with my brother.
I see loads of fur and something moving under it. I literally have a panic attack. I did not know what to do - my mum was out so I called her and tell her. She said the best thing to do was to leave them alone so I did. From what I could see she had 3 or 4 babies. But I did not know how she got pregnant, so I checked all the rabbits in the cage and find out that one of them is male so he had 2 male and 2 female.
The babies all looked like they had been fed well as they all had big round tummies. They also looked a lot like the mother, white with black patches. I kept checking on them every 3hrs. I tried getting hold of the owners but couldn't and they were not due back for another 3 weeks. I left them and did not touch them as some mothers will pick up your scent and kill her own babies which I did not want to happen. That is all that has happened so far, will keep updating on my puzzling next 3 weeks. Taylor
***** Karen Sez *****Well, won't the owners be surprised, lol! What you need to know right now, is that the second doe may also deliver a litter of babies. Have you separated the buck out of the girls' cage? You'll need a third cage - you can't put the two bucks together. I hope you can figure something out.
You're doing good, Taylor. Just make sure that the mom gets all the food and water she needs. If needed, some black oil sunflower seeds (bird seed) can help the doe make plenty of milk.
By now, you should be able to check and handle the babies without worrying about the mum harming them.
I hope you have not been too traumatized! You just watch - those little bunnies will be sooo cute as they reach 2-3 weeks old!
